November 2014: Pie Crust





November's challenge is to make pie crust. You can make any pie, with any filling.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 sticks cold unsalted butter
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 tbsp sugar
1/3 cup very cold vegetable shortening 
1/2 cup ice water

Directions:
1. Mix flour, salt, and sugar.
2. Add  butter and shortening. 
3. Mix until the butter is the size of peas.
4. Pour in the ice water while mixing. 
5. Knead and roll into a ball. 
6. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
7. Cut the dough in half. Roll each piece on a well-floured board into a circle.
8. Place in a pie pan.
9. Add filling, cover with top crust. 
10. Bake at 375°F for 45 minutes, or until pie crust is golden brown.
